About Our Council
St. Lawrence Council was founded on March 18, 1923 through the efforts of the Rev. George L. Gardner and its 83 charter members. It is named after St. Lawrence, who was a third-century archdeacon of Rome, distributor of alms or charity, and “keeper of the treasures of the church” in a time when Christianity was outlawed. On 6 August 258, by decree of Emperor Valerian, Pope Saint Sixtus II and six deacons were beheaded, leaving Lawrence as the ranking Church official in Rome. The St. Lawrence Council works closely with the St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish in Sayville.
